Abstract
S’attacher aux écrits d’André Siegfried de la période 1906-1937 et à leur héritage leplaysien permet de saisir, sous l’angle de l’internationalisation des objets de recherche, une phase importante des études nord-américaines en France. La médiation leplaysienne est ici exemplaire des imbrications entre trames idéologiques et modes de connaissance. Ainsi le « racialisme » de Siegfried procède-t-il d’un culturalisme qu’on ne peut comprendre sans évoquer la galaxie sémantique dans laquelle il s’inscrit. Certes, davantage qu’un passeur, Siegfried fait aujourd’hui figure de passager dans l’histoire des sciences sociales. Mais il est temps de réévaluer sans idées préconçues la place de ce passager.
