Plus que dans d’autres domaines, le lien est étroit entre la société et la sociologie des relations interethniques. Le sociologue,malgré son ambition d’objectivité, ne peut échapper complètement à sa tradition nationale, même si ses analyses ne sont paspour autant déterminées par cette appartenance. Nationale par sa manière de penser les problèmes et par les enquêtes sur lesquelleselle se fonde — spécificité d’une discipline qui se définit par sa tension entre un pôle expérimental et un pôlehistorique — , la sociologie participe pourtant d’un projet de connaissance dont l’horizon est universel. Ce n’est pas en niantou refoulant la dimension sociale et nationale de la réflexion sociologique ni en confondant la sociologie d’un pays avec lasociologie en général, mais, tout au contraire, en assumant pleinement cette relativité et en la critiquant que le sociologue peuts’inscrire dans l’ambition universelle de la connaissance rationnelle.
