Despite the earthquake's moderate magnitude, damage corresponding to Modified Mercalli intensities VI to VII were reported. In addition to providing an overview of the nature of the earthquake, this paper presents illustrations and an analysis of damage to roads, bridges, the power system, water lines, and residential houses. The earthquake caused a major damaging rockslide, which is very unusual for an event of this size. Finally, the impact of the event is examined in the wider context of eastern North America seismic hazard.
