Abstract
Cet article vise tout d’abord à réfléchir sur le roman du génocide des Tutsi du Rwanda à la lumière de la critique consacrée au sujet comparable dans la littérature occidentale à propos de la Shoah . Il montre qu’on y trouve la même interrogation sur la représentation artistique d’un événement caractérisé par une violence limite. Si certains arguent de la nécessité d’oublier, de passer à autre chose ; d’autres s’opposent à la mise en fiction du génocide en considérant la transformation de l’ événement en objet littéraire comme immoral et scandaleux. Ces derniers estiment que le silence devant l’horreur serait dans ce cas la seule attitude moralement valable. D’autres se demandent non sans raison si le silence est respectueux des morts, et s’il est même nécessaire au recueillement, n’ouvrirait pas la porte à l’oubli, s’il perdurait. Et dans un deuxième temps, on montrera que dans L’aîné des orphelins , l’auteur n’évite pas l’ événement , mais le soumet à une vision oblique et distanciée de façon à rendre étrange sa représentation qui le soustrait aux codes convenus de la vraisemblance romanesque.
