Cet article montre comment les objets exposés dans les musées nationaux d’Afrique fonctionnent comme des supports de discours identitaires ou comme des moyens de reconnaissance et de revendications politiques. Le paradigme ethnique hérité de la période coloniale donne lieu à des aménagements et à des actualisations, qui visent à rendre compte à la fois de la diversité culturelle et de l’unité nationale des différents pays concernés. Les relations des visiteurs aux collections muséales sont parfois l’occasion de processus de subjectivation et d’appropriation, dont l’observation permet de décentrer les débats sur les publics des institutions patrimoniales. Sur la base d’exemples concernant les musées nationaux du Mali, du Niger, du Burkina Faso et du Sénégal, il s’agit ainsi de mieux comprendre pourquoi les usages politiques des objets de musée posent non seulement des problèmes muséographiques, mais aussi des questions plus importantes au sujet de la fabrique des communautés en Afrique de l’Ouest.
