Toutes les sociétés ont leurs façons d’expliquer la souffrance et la guérison. Bien que ces modèles explicatifs et les stratégies thérapeutiques qui y sont reliées varient beaucoup d’une culture et d’une époque à l’autre, on trouve des guérisseurs partout. Dans la société occidentale, ce sont les médecins formés dans le cadre de la biomédecine qui dominent le champ de la guérison. Est-ce à dire que les médecins sont des guérisseurs? Mais d’abord, qu’est-ce que la guérison pour des pédiatres pratiquant dans une grande ville comme Montréal? Cet article est le fruit d’une recherche de maîtrise qui a été menée au Centre hospitalier universitaire mère-enfant Sainte-Justine de Montréal, un hôpital de haut niveau desservant une population multiculturelle. Il s’appuie sur une série d’entrevues en profondeur réalisées avec des médecins de plusieurs spécialités. Les entretiens explorent le concept de la guérison à travers différents thèmes qui apparaissent de façon récurrente dans la littérature anthropologique sur le sujet, tels les thèmes du don, de la transformation et du pouvoir.
