Abstract
Résumé Le plus fameux roman de Groulx est ici analysé à l'aide d'une série d'approches concentriques (figurative, actantielle, sémantique) et simultanément parcouru dans renonciation de la passion recitative qui le traverse, qui tournerait autour du désir d'un Nom propre. À ce désir, le roman de Groulx réserve une satisfaction mythique, sacrificielle et narcissique. Voilà un legs qu'il importe de soumettre à la critique. Le titre de l'article suggère par son ironie comment, dans le système polémique qu'instaure 'L'Appel de la race, le désir du sujet trouve parfois sa vérité impensée traduite improprement dans la langue de l'antagoniste. L'épigraphe, autre adaptation mimétique d'un air connu mettant en vedette un militaire anglais, suggère que pour qui part en guerre, l'épreuve ultime consiste à assurer son retour. Enfin, de manière à écarter les trop faciles critiques idéologiques de L'Appel de la race, cet article propose que soit adoptée la méthode de facques Ferron, qui consiste à reprendre les signifiants de Groulx pour les déplacer sous l'impulsion d'un autre sujet d'écriture.
