Abstract
Cet article porte sur le discours de leaders d’associations communautaires (italiennes, juives, haïtiennes et libanaises) de la région de Montréal sur la question nationale. Engagés qu’ils sont dans l’action sociale et politique, ces leaders contribuent à la définition d’identités particulières et sont porteurs de revendications basées sur l’ethnicité. Cette construction sociale de l’ethnicité et la mobilisation identaire autour d’enjeux politiques participent d’un contexte societal particulier marqué par la question nationale. Le discours est analysé autour de trois thèmes : la question linguistique, les références identitaires, les orientations politiques. L’interprétation renvoie au rôle de l’ethnicité, comme catégorie politique, au rôle de l’État dans la gestion de l’ethnicité et aux rapports de force entre blocs sociaux souverainistes et fédéralistes dans le contexte canadien et québécois.
