Abstract
L'actuel « recentrage » de l'analyse géographique sur les lieux et les régions constitue une des tendances les plus marquantes de la géographie contemporaine. Un regard sur cette nouvelle géographie régionale permet de mesurer les progrès récents accomplis par la discipline. Si les développements conceptuels sur la région offrent l'heureux présage d'une métathéorie géographique où sont réunies dans un même cadre interprétatif individualités des lieux et structures spatiales, les faiblesses de la géographie régionale empirique illustrent la difficulté pour la géographie de s'ériger en science appliquée. L'auteur s'interroge en outre sur l'avenir d'une science qui hésite à se ranger du côté de l'action.
