Abstract: The article examines the trope of war memories in Joseph Craig Danner’s The Fires of Edgarville (2009), discussing how the characters reveal the long-hidden secrets, wrapped in historical mystery, that plague a small Oregon lumber town during the Pacific War(s)—racism, revenge, and a phantom arsonist, among others. A journey into the past and into the history of war trauma, the novel pieces together the diminishing and elliptical memories of various individuals and ethnic groups. It is the epitome of the war narrative, characterized by melancholic post-memory and the mourning for loss, which offers a site of contested war(s) and cultural memories, a redemptive and liberating force that enables the traumatized, and the violators, to cope with the future.
