Dans les décennies à venir, l'adaptation au changement climatique est une question vitale pour la perpétuation des espèces végétales et animales, dont l’espèce humaine. Alors vers quel type d'adaptation souhaitons-nous aller ? L’usage du mot « adaptation » est aujourd'hui confus. Les notions « d’adaptation », de dynamiques de développement des espèces, dont celle de l’humain et de leurs « relations de dépendances » semblent mal comprises par les leaders d’opinion, les décideurs publics et les profanes. La question de l’adaptation au réchauffement climatique est-elle bien posée en termes de bien-être d’humanité et de progrès sociétal ? Les auteurs s’interrogent sur la hauteur de vue que l'humain doit atteindre pour une meilleure vision de son devenir dans et sur la nature, mais aussi de son épanouissement relationnel et comportemental avec les autres espèces pour un mieux-être comme source de bien-être et indicateur de progrès. Trois perspectives différentes de la conception commune de l'adaptation dans la société occidentale sont proposées : la bioadéquation, la compensation et l'adaptation. Ces trois sens contribuent à replacer l'humain comme être biologique et espèce animale vivant en relation avec d’autres espèces domestiques et sauvages. Aussi dans le contexte de notre dynamique de développement en zones urbaines et périurbaines, ce discernement participe à ouvrir le débat sur les aptitudes réelles de réponses des espèces face aux aléas du changement climatique.
