Abstract
Inspiré de l’historiographie régionale et de l’historiographie du tourisme, cet article vise à mieux comprendre les représentations identitaires créées et véhiculées par les touristes qui ont parcouru la Gaspésie au cours des années 1930 et 1940. À travers le regard des voyageurs – récits écrits et photographiques – se dégage une vision ancienne et traditionnelle de la région et de la population gaspésienne, vision qui donne prise à une critique de l’industrie touristique associée à la modernité. Ainsi, ces images influencées par un antimodernisme ambiant, davantage que nous renseigner seulement sur les représentations identitaires plus ou moins inventées des Gaspésiens, nous informent sur les voyageurs eux-mêmes, sur leur façon de voir le monde et sur la relation qu’ils entretiennent, qu’ils souhaitent entretenir avec un monde qu’ils jugent différent du leur, plus simple, plus authentique.
