L’agriculture de conservation (AC) obéit à trois principes : travail du sol minimal, couverture du sol permanente et multiculture. Partant de ses avantages avérés pour l’écologie du sol, la séquestration de carbone et son adoption massive dans quelques régions du monde, elle est présentée par ses promoteurs comme un système durable convenant à tous contextes. Dès lors elle a été mondialement diffusée au nom du développement durable. Une analyse à partir de documentation et d’observations souligne des connaissances encore incomplètes, la spécificité de son origine géographique, sa rareté dans les anciennes agricultures ainsi que la disparité de son adoption entre régions et types d’exploitations. Diverses causes de résistance des agricultures paysannes africaines et malgaches sont envisagées : faisabilité limitée en contexte semi-aride agro-pastoral, existence de solutions concurrentes pour la gestion du risque érosif, itinéraires techniques mal adaptés, et importance des facteurs temps et diversité dans les processus d’innovation. Malgré cette causalité multiple, le postulat d’avantages universels de l’AC réduit la question de l’adoption à la seule gestion politique et financière de la diffusion. Sa faisabilité universelle et sa durabilité écologique ne sont pas encore prouvées. Il faut recommander la poursuite de l’effort d’adaptation technique et d’organisation des paysans en analysant mieux le contexte et en s’appuyant sur les pratiques, les savoirs locaux et les capacités d’innovation des paysans, enfin savoir poursuivre d’autres pistes en parallèle.
