Abstract
Support de pratiques dissymétriques entre hommes et femmes, l'espace public urbain est-il aussi porteur de normes? Est-il capable de suggérer ou d'imposer des comportements particuliers à chaque sexe ? L'article étudie les manuels de savoir-vivre édités en France depuis un siècle. Pour la période et le pays considérés, il précise la portée et les limites du rôle que jouent les endroits légalement accessibles à tous dans la reproduction ou la transformation des rapports entre les sexes. Cette source est un des moyens permettant d'établir des distinctions spatiales en fonction de critères relevant du marquage sexuel des lieux; de ce fait, elle procure une analyse plus complexe de la notion d'espace public.
