Abstract
Dans quelle mesure l’éducation scolaire conforte-t-elle la cohésion sociale ? Après avoir défini la cohésion sociale de manière opérationnelle et en mobilisant des comparaisons internationales sur un échantillon de pays économiquement développés, cet article explore en quoi certaines caractéristiques des systèmes scolaires s’avèrent associées aux scores de cohésion sociale. Il apparaît que les relations sont plus fortes entre la cohésion et certaines variables sociales qu’entre celles-ci et les variables scolaires proprement dites et que, parmi ces dernières, c’est surtout l’emprise des diplômes sur la carrière sociale et professionnelle des individus qui s’avère importante. Cet article met en évidence un effet pervers de la croyance dans la méritocratie scolaire qui justifierait les conséquences sociales des hiérarchies scolaires. Ce mécanisme est lui-même inclus dans un ensemble de perceptions de la légitimité des inégalités sociales.
