Abstract
Cet article traite de la façon dont le tourisme, avec certains processus historiques tels que l’enculturation et la construction nationale postcoloniale, a affecté la perception que les Manggarai ont de leur culture. À Manggarai, dans la partie occidentale de l’île de Flores (Indonésie), se pratique traditionnellement durant la saison des moissons et les rites de mariage un combat au fouet dans lequel les hommes affichent leur habileté en s’efforçant de ne pas être touchés par le fouet de leur adversaire. Ce jeu est devenu depuis peu une attraction touristique. Pour les Manggarai, ce jeu revêt une importance grandissante dans la promotion de leur culture, tant pour les besoins du tourisme que pour la construction d’une identité nationale et régionale. L’article s’intéresse à la manière dont ce jeu est perçu dans divers contextes, en cherchant notamment à saisir ce que différents Manggarai pensent de son exécution pour les touristes, hors de son contexte rituel traditionnel. À travers l’exemple de ce combat au fouet, cet article examine comment l’idée de « culture » est construite à Manggarai, à la fois comme « patrimoine », comme « objet » et comme « information », et cherche à élucider le rôle joué par le tourisme dans cette construction.
