Les médecins de famille, en tant que premier rempart dans le système de la santé, sont à l’avant-plan de la détection, du diagnostic et de la prise en charge des maladies. En matière de coronaropathie, les patients s’attendent à ce que ces médecins connaissent les façons de diminuer le risque de coronaropathie, notamment au moyen d’un régime alimentaire. Malheureusement, la plupart des médecins de famille n’ont pas reçu de formation officielle sur les conseils nutritionnels à donner aux patients. De fait, il y a peu de temps ou d’incitatif accordéà l’éducation des patients en matière d’alimentation. Ainsi, les médecins préfèrent diriger les patients vers d’autres professionnels afin qu’ils y reçoivent des conseils en matière de diététique. Cependant, une fois bien informés, les médecins de famille peuvent s’avérer efficaces pour donner de tels conseils. Une étude danoise a montré que les patients présentant un risque de coronaropathie ayant reçu des conseils en diététique de la part de leur médecin de famille ont connu une perte de poids significative, une réduction du tour de taille et de l’indice de masse corporelle, une augmentation significative du cholestérol à lipoprotéines de haute densité (C-HDL), ainsi qu’une réduction significative du risque de maladie cardiovasculaire. En donnant des conseils nutritionnels, les médecins peuvent agir en tant que source d’information actuelle et aider à rétablir des perceptions erronées que peuvent avoir les patients à propos des régimes alimentaires.
