L’enfermement massif des autochtones au Canada est une thématique de recherche dominante dans la littérature. En effet, depuis la fin des années 1960, les chercheurs en sciences sociales ont produit de nombreuses études qui ont permis de dégager différentes thèses explicatives de la surreprésentation des autochtones au sein des institutions d’enfermement et de mettre en lumière les profils sociojudiciaires et les besoins des autochtones incarcérés. Bien que l’incarcération disproportionnée des femmes autochtones soit constatée depuis plusieurs années au Canada, comme au Québec, très peu d’attention leur a été accordé. Dans cet article, les auteures examinent, dans un premier temps, les travaux produits sur la surreprésentation des autochtones depuis trente ans et proposent une reconstruction de l’objet de l’enfermement des femmes autochtones au Québec, à partir des travaux théoriques sur l’exclusion et la marginalisation.
