Abstract This article proposes and explores a robust method for analysing longitudinal continuous responses with informative drop‐outs. The robust method, developed in the framework of the maximum likelihood, is useful for bounding the influence of potential outliers when analysing the data. The asymptotic properties of the robust estimators are discussed. The empirical properties are investigated in simulations. An application is provided using longitudinal measurements on a biomarker of sepsis being studied for understanding the progression of pneumonia to severe sepsis in a group of patients.The Canadian Journal of Statistics42: 670–695; 2014 © 2014 Statistical Society of Canada
