A new electrorheological fluid joint damper based on orifice restriction has been developed for semi-active vibration control. The damper is capable of providing a continuously variable damping torque in response to an electric field. A mathematical model of the damper is developed and the influence of model parameters on the damping torque is analyzed. Performance tests show that the magnitude of the output torque increases 1.6 times within 10 milliseconds.
