Abstract
This study argues that there is evidence of binitarianism within Second Temple Judaism. A careful and close reading of the Book of Similitudes indicates that a distinction is made between the Lord of Spirits and the Name of the Lord of Spirits. Not only this, but the Name of the Lord of Spirits appears to be the same person as the figure that looks like a Son of Man and is variously referred to as the Chosen One, the Righteous One, and the Anointed. Such a distinction and equation would help explain why the earliest Christians would worship Jesus as an aspect of God. Also, if correct, the thesis would require a re-appraisal of Second Temple Judaism with regard to the nature of its monotheistic outlook.
