Abstract
At C-COKE, an experimental prototype rule-based system (or expert system) that can help reduce operational downtime due to encroaching icebergs was developed. Our objectives are to conduct a small-scale feasibility study, to develop an experimental prototype and to evaluate the viability of such a system. The prototype performs five vital functions: 1, identify the ice hazard and determine the appropriate ice-alert level, 2. determine the extent of the threat and/or potential threat, 3. perform a systematic risk analysis and formulate all possible options, 4. recommend an appropi-iate course of action, and 5. explain its decisions, if requested. The goal of the system is to help minimize operational downtime and to ensure the safety of the rig's crew.
