Résumé Une image montre, reproduit, informe, imagine et, selon Michel Melot, l’essentiel de ce qu’elle exprime est irréductible au langage. L’auteur s’interroge, dans cet article d’ouverture, sur la nature de l’image et sur la condition de son existence. Il rappelle et explique que l’image est une création de l’esprit et de la culture et que, de ce fait, son environnement, son contexte, son insertion dans un cadre plus large sont une condition essentielle à sa compréhension. L’image relève du monde de l’analogie : elle n’est pas un texte, même si l’écriture peut redevenir image, pas plus qu’elle n’est la réalité.
