Abstract
This chapter discusses the clinical signs, immunologic mechanisms and etiologic associations, diagnostics, treatments, and prevention of heaves or recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) and summer pasture-associated obstructive pulmonary disease (SPAOPD) in horses. RAO and SPAOPD are incurable allergy-like diseases affecting adult horses exposed to the barn dusts or airborne antigens present at pasture, respectively. Horses affected with these conditions present episodes of respiratory distress at rest, induced by ill-defined environmental triggers. Bronchospasm, airway tissue remodeling, neutrophilic inflammation and mucus secretions are characteristic findings. The clinical history suggests that antigen-specific immune responses underlie the diseases' pathogenesis and development. Reduction of environmental antigen (e.g., dust, molds, mites, pollens) exposure is paramount for the successful long-term management of horses with heaves or SPAOPD. Whether administered systemically or by inhalation, cortico-steroids are the most effective medication for the control of clinical signs in heaves and SPAOPD.
