Evaluating the dissolution and natural attenuation of jet fuel at a former tank farm

Abstract
Fuel handling practices at the former National Defence tank farm in Ottawa, Canada, resulted in the release of jet fuel to the subsurface. A site investigation was undertaken to determine the extent of the contamination and to evaluate the effectiveness of natural attenuation as a remedial alternative for the contaminated groundwater. A soil-vapour study and borehole and test pit soil samples aided in conceptualizing the residual jet fuel source term. BioRedox-MT3DMS was used to simulate the dissolution of the multicomponent jet fuel and the subsequent transport and biodegradation of the various hydrocarbon components in the underlying aquifer. The model was able to simulate and support the data collected at the site to indicate that natural attenuation processes were effectively reducing contaminant concentrations and mass, and that the spatial extent of the plume had effectively reached a steady state. In addition, the model indicated that the source term would remain for many years due to the slow dissolution and biodegradation rates of the heavier hydrocarbons.
