Abstract
En France, comme dans d'autres pays européens, en dépit du déclin de la pratique chrétienne, le parrainage baptismal est une institution très vivante. Ce paradoxe apparent s'éclaire si l'on analyse ses fonctions dans le contexte actuel de la parenté contemporaine, où le principe de l'élection est central. Le parrainage relie surtout des proches parents ou des amis très chers. Il est le don symbolique d'un enfant à quelqu'un qui doit y répondre positivement. Cette réciprocité autour d'un enfant permet que se déploient toutes sortes de liens électifs à l'intérieur de la parenté consanguine et alliée. Le parrainage crée de l'amitié entre parents et de la parenté entre amis, ce qui lui donne une fonction toute particulière pour resserrer des liens dans les recompositions familiales après divorce. Cette institution ancienne, au contenu fortement codifié, est productrice efficace d'affects.
