Abstract
Après avoir présenté brièvement les origines et les objectifs de ma recherche sur l'expérience lesbienne à Montréal durant les années 1950 et 1960, j'expose les réflexions théoriques qui façonnent mes interrogations sur cette expérience passée. Partant d'un double postulat, constructionniste et féministe, j'examine successivement des écrits féministes qui définissent le lesbianisme comme une non-conformité au rôle sexuel, les analyses constructionnistes qui l'appréhendent comme un phénomène culturel, la thèse d'Adrienne Rich qui place le lesbianisme dans un continuum de résistance à l'institution hétérosexuelle patriarcale et enfin la perspective féministe matérialiste qui permet de l'inscrire dans les rapports sociaux de sexe. Je clos cet article par une interrogation sur la difficulté de retracer l'existence lesbienne dans d'autres contextes historiques sans verser dans l'ethnocentrisme.
