Abstract
L’idée d’une politique nataliste pour le Québec est souvent évoquée pour contrer les conséquences néfastes qu’on attend de trois phénomènes liés à la baisse récente de la fécondité : le vieillissement de la population, le non-remplacement des générations, ainsi que la réduction de l’importance relative des francophones dans l’ensemble canadien. L’examen de cette question soulève au moins deux aspects importants : le premier concerne la pertinence même de poser le problème en termes d’une politique nataliste et le second a trait à l’efficacité qu’on peut attendre d’une telle politique. L’un et l’autre sont à remettre en cause. En ce qui concerne le second aspect, les revendications des femmes paraissent constituer une condition essentielle qui risque de modifier sensiblement les perspectives d’intervention.
