L’article pose le problème de la contribution de l’agriculture à l’aménagement des espaces périurbains par les villes. Il repose sur la mise en relation de travaux de recherche menés dans le cadre d’une thèse en 1999 dans l’arrondissement de Lille et d’un programme de recherche sur le développement urbain durable mené en 2007 dans l’agglomération tourangelle. La comparaison montre l’importance de la disponibilité foncière et de la convergence des représentations des élus locaux et des agriculteurs quant aux fonctions de l’agriculture. L’article explique les réticences des agriculteurs à s’engager dans des politiques territoriales discriminantes et finit sur la rareté foncière comme levier pour l’ancrage d’une agriculture multifonctionnelle.
