El presente ensayo ofrece una breve reflexión en torno al concepto de la autonomía universitaria, centrándose en el abordaje de dos temas críticos: a) las implicaciones que acarrea para la universidad pública la emergencia de una nueva concepción del conocimiento, definida como pragmática, instrumental y utilitarista; b) los cambios que se busca instituir en la universidad pública por parte de las autoridades de gobierno y de otras entidades (nacionales e internacionales), en el marco de lo que cabe llamar un proceso de transformación de la institucionalidad del Estado costarricense, que inició hace un cuarto de siglo y el cual se desarrolla en sintonía con la instauración en el país del nuevo modelo económico de apertura comercial, inversión extranjera directa, “ventajas competitivas”, “nichos de producción y exportación”, tratados de libre comercio.
