Abstract
Silicone rubber (SIR) insulators have performed better than porcelain and glass in outdoor test sites and when tested in salt-fog and tracking wheels. This has been attributed to the diffusion of the low molecular weight (LMW) silicone fluid from the bulk of the SIR to the surface of the rubber and including the pollution layer. The aging performance of high temperature vulcanized (HTV) SIR is investigated. The effects of artificial aging environments simulating aging factors such as acid rain, wind and salt-fog were studied. The static contact angle was monitored during the aging tests. The content of the LMW silicone fluid at each level of aging was measured. The effect of the LMW silicone fluid on the aging performance of HTV-SIR is elucidated.
