Abstract
Le sobriquet de Calicot désigne le jeune commis marchand prétentieux sous la Restauration, dont l’archétype apparaît en 1817 au théâtre comique et est aussitôt relayé par des estampes satiriques et autres imprimés éphémères. La représentation du Calicot comme type social parisien, dans la culture visuelle et imprimée, traduit l’intérêt de l’époque pour l’observation des rôles sociaux dans une modernité urbaine en mutation. Cette étude propose d’envisager l’imagerie du Calicot comme un jalon dans une tradition d’observation sociale, héritée de la physiognomonie, qui préfigure la vaste opération de taxonomie de la société française des Physiologies. En outre, l’examen d’une sélection d’estampes satiriques sur les calicots permet de saisir le rôle de cette figure dans la formation des identités masculines de la société parisienne de la Restauration.
