Le Québec et la France ont adopté des conceptions normatives différentes des rapports entre religion et école. En témoigne tout particulièrement la question de l’enseignement des religions qui a été à l’ordre du jour simultanément dans les deux sociétés. La France, marquée par la laïcité scolaire depuis plus d’un siècle, se montre plus craintive à l’égard d’une formation spécifique sur les religions dans le cursus scolaire. Le Québec a laïcisé son système scolaire un siècle plus tard, mais a défini la laïcité comme compatible avec une discipline consacrée à l’éthique et à la compréhension des visions du monde, religieuses et séculières. Les modèles français et québécois d’enseignement de la religion, bien qu’empruntant parfois des termes similaires, comme la tolérance et le dialogue, génèrent des effets différents quant à la prise en compte du pluralisme religieux dans l’espace scolaire. La France tend à privilégier une conception de l’école comme sanctuaire coupé des influences de la société civile, alors que le Québec entend porter à la connaissance critique de l’élève ce qui se vit en dehors de l’école en matière de religion. Néanmoins, de part et d’autre de l’Atlantique, la religion représente encore une possible pierre d’achoppement dans les consensus à propos de la laïcité de l’école.
