Abstract
Cette étude dresse le portrait statistique des tendances reliées au processus d’acquisition de l’indépendance résidentielle au Canada chez les individus nés entre 1942 et 1981. Après un bref préambule visant à inscrire ce processus dans le cadre plus englobant de l’entrée dans la vie adulte, les auteurs examinent, à l’aide de données issues de l’Enquête sociale générale de 2001, divers indices liés au calendrier et à l’intensité du premier départ du foyer parental et du premier retour vers le milieu familial. Toutes les analyses sont fondées sur des comparaisons entre les sexes, les provinces et les cohortes de naissance. Une attention spéciale est également accordée aux motifs allégués pour justifier ces départs et ces retours. De façon globale, les résultats suggèrent une tendance à l’allongement de l’étape « jeunesse » intercalée entre l’adolescence et l’âge adulte ainsi qu’une propension accrue à aborder l’autonomie résidentielle via une période charnière de semi-autonomie.
