En 1959, lorsque la télévision a fait son apparition en Inde, le premier ministre de l’époque, Jawaharlal Nehru, a affirmé qu’il s’agissait d’un luxe que le pays ne pouvait se permettre. Il estimait que ce média devait être axé sur la population rurale, et servir à l’éducation et au développement. À l’époque de ma recherche en 2002-2003, bien que 70 % de la population de l’Inde vive encore en milieu rural, la vision de Nehru était largement oubliée et les émissions présentaient principalement des familles des classes moyenne et supérieure dans un environnement urbain. Cet article étudie les différentes répercussions de cette programmation pour les collectivités urbaines plutôt que rurales chez les habitants de Kothariya au Rajasthan, en Inde. Après avoir présenté un résumé de l’histoire de la télévision en Inde, l’article traite des réalisateurs et des producteurs qui créent des émissions généralement axées sur les collectivités urbaines pour la chaîne publique de l’Inde, Doordarshan. Il fait ensuite état des répercussions de ces émissions sur les habitants des milieux ruraux, en s’intéressant particulièrement aux perceptions des comportements urbains et aux désirs de consommer acquis par le biais de la télévision.
