Abstract
L'emblème, fusion de courts textes et de xylographies ou gravures, apparaît avec la Renaissance. L'attention des chercheurs modernes, après de nombreuses études consacrées surtout aux origines de l'emblème et à la transmission des motifs visuels, porte désormais davantage sur la définition et sur le statut de l'emblème en tant que genre, sans qu'il ait été possible jusqu'à présent d'en arriver à une définition satisfaisante. La plupart des chercheurs tendent pourtant à voir dans l'emblème une production essentiellement redondante, où l'une des parties, soit l'image soit le texte, serait forcément superflue. La présente étude part de la lecture d'un emblème de Gilles Corrozet tiré de son Hécatomgraphie (1540) pour voir dans cette redondance non pas le signe d'une infériorité générique mais celui d'un effort de composition qui vise à améliorer le rapport signal /bruit de l'emblème, qui privilégie l'univocité du genre et qui impose à l'emblème ce qu'il convient de qualifier un rythme de lecture.
