Contre le « généticisme » qui tend à ramener la complexité des êtres vivants, y compris de l’humain, à un programme inscrit dans les gènes, l’anthropologie met en évidence l’intrication de l’histoire biologique et sociale des humains, dans une prise en compte du travail du temps et de la culture. Face aux biotechnologies désormais en mesure de retravailler la Nature et de remodeler les espèces vivantes, je montrerai qu’il ne reste aux humains que le devoir de responsabilité à l’égard de la vie et l’obligation de solidarité avec toutes les espèces vivantes. L’humanisme à inventer devra être un humanisme qui fait une place, en son coeur même, à la révolution de la géno-protéomique et aux biotechnologies tout en réinscrivant l’humanité dans la longue histoire évolutive des vivants qu’elle achève en quelque sorte.
