Abstract

GREENSHIELDS Les Réformations catholiques en France : Le témoignage des statuts synodaux Cet article considère les évêques français comme les chefs de file de la réforme catho~lique, et les statuts synodaux promulgués comme des indicateurs importants de leur activité réformatrice. Ayant reconstruit la carte de la France ecclésiastique pour la période de la Réforme, les auteurs analysent la fréquence de promulgation et le contenu changeant des statuts afin de dessiner le tableau de la réforme catholique de 1390 à 1789. Leur analyse montre un mouvement de réforme proprement française, à destination des Français, commençant bien avant la réforme de Luther, ayant son apogée pendant les années 1670-80, et continuant jusqu’au milieu du XVIIIe siècle. Ces développements ont contribué notablement à la modernisation des mentalités.
