Descriptions of Phryganella laurentiana n. sp. and Difflugia yorkui n. sp. two new species of testate amoebae from boreal forest wetlands in Ontario, Canada
Bibliographic record
Abstract
Two previously undescribed testate amoebae of the genera Phryganella and Difflugia were discovered in samples of benthic sediment from small pools bordering the Kattawagami River in northeastern Ontario's boreal forest (Canada). Phryganella laurentiana n. sp. is among the smallest of the known Phryganella species (mean test diameter=26 μm) and has metabolic, polymorphic pseudopodia including those with pointed apices typical of the genus. The most important distinguishing feature is the total lack of a marginal ventral surface or border surrounding the pseudostomal aperture of the test. Tests are covered with agglutinated angular siliceous particles, except on the ventral edge of the pseudostomal aperture, where an abundance of organic cement covering the small particles in this region has created a smooth rim. Difflugia yorkui n. sp. is distinguished from other Difflugia species by its large size (mean length=333 μm) and its unique fusiform shape. Most of its test, including the bluntly tapered posterior, is covered with large, angular siliceous particles, but not the anterior region, where particles are markedly smaller surrounding the circular oral aperture (55 μm diam.). The taxonomy of both species is discussed relative to other similar species. Although light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to describe and illustrate both species, the unique morphology of both should enable their future identification by light microscopy alone.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one source (direct Gemma or distilled Codex), not a consensus.
