Abstract
Dans La volonté de savoir, Michel Foucault attribue à la démographie un rôle central dans la mise en place de nouvelles techniques de pouvoir, ce qu’il a appelé la biopolitique de la population. Or, cette vision de la démographie comme réponse à la nécessité de modifier les techniques de « pouvoir sur la vie », en même temps que s’étendait l’emprise du capitalisme, a trouvé assez peu d’écho tant chez les démographes que chez les sociologues, y compris ceux d’inspiration marxiste. Sans doute une partie de l’explication est-elle à rechercher du côté des ambivalences de Foucault lui-même face à la thèse marxiste en général et, plus particulièrement, face au problème de la reproduction. Nous invitons ici à réinterroger Foucault sur ces questions et proposons une lecture où celui-ci prend finalement place dans un espace, décisif mais laissé vide, de la théorie marxiste, l’espace de la reproduction.
