Abstract
Le haut-lieu est un concept trop peu connu ou mal saisi, compte tenu du flou notionnel qui l'affecte et du florilège d'appellations qui y renvoient. Il est difficile de le définir, voire hasardeux d'en déterminer la fonction. Cette absence de définition nuit inévitablement à l'utilisation que l'on peut en faire, alors même qu'il est devenu l'un des concepts-clés de la géographie, en notre époque où le sens des lieux et le sentiment d'appartenance sont fortement questionnés. Sensible à cette difficulté, il nous est apparu pertinent de chercher à la pallier à l'aide d'une analyse étymologique, puis d'une lecture critique et comparative des divers sens qu'on lui prête. Nous tentons ainsi d'en arriver à une définition qui souligne la fécondité et l'utilité du haut-lieu pour faire sens d'un monde de plus en plus complexe, sinon pour mieux l'habiter.
