Abstract
Desde finales del siglo XVIII y durante todo el siglo XIX se desarrollaron, tanto en Canada como en los Estados Unidos, una serie de establecimientos cuarentenarios que, de algun modo, participaban del ideario romantico, naturalista y paisajista que empezaba a germinar por aquellos entonces en el campo del urbanismo. En el texto se analizan estas ideas y se ponen en relacion con los lazaretos canadienses y sobre todo con el de Grosse-Ile, ya que este fue la principal puerta de entrada a Canada durante todo el siglo XIX y su estudio ofrece un fresco bastante preciso de las diferentes posiciones respecto a la prevencion de las epidemias en ese pais.
