Cet article apporte une nouvelle réponse au problème bien connu que pose l’emploi du démonstratif dit de notoriété (ou démonstratif épique) en ancien français. L’opposition appariement référentiel contigu saturé ( cist ) / appariement référentiel contigu non saturé ( cil ) nous permet d’expliquer les cinq caractéristiques suivantes, qui déterminent cet emploi :
