Abstract
La surdité, longtemps appréhendée comme un handicap, est devenue objet de recherche culturelle depuis une quinzaine d’années. Cette nouvelle approche se fonde sur la distinction entre sourd (condition physiologique) et Sourd (identité culturelle positive). L’objectif du présent article est de présenter un cadre général d’appréhension culturelle de la surdité (du Sourd). Dans un premier temps, nous décrivons la relation de l’appréhension culturelle de la surdité à son appréhension comme handicap physique et social. Nous montrons qu’il ne faut pas opposer ces perspectives, mais plutôt les combiner, car chacune éclaire une dimension constitutive de l’identité sourde, tiraillée entre pathologie et culture. Ensuite, nous explorons la structure de la culture sourde en soulignant comment celle-ci naît du dépassement de l’identité négative produite par le handicap par une identité linguistique positive fondée sur l’appartenance à une communauté de sens. Finalement, nous voyons comment cette identité positive se constitue dans un rapport à l’altérité qui se présente ici sous le vocable de « monde des entendants ».
