Abstract
Cet article fait suite à la présentation d'un premier bilan de la thèse relative à la « crise agricole » du Bas-Canada dans la première moitié du XIX e siècle. L'accent est mis, cette fois, sur les conditions nouvelles dans lesquelles évolue l'agriculture, notamment aux plans démographique, économique et social. En cette période de croissance rapide de la population, il est significatif en effet de noter que rétablissement rural commande des coûts fonciers accrus, attribuables en partie aux spéculations de l'habitant, qui cherche à rentabiliser son fonds, mais en partie aussi à celles d'une classe nouvelle de propriétaires terriens pour qui la seigneurie est vite devenue une entreprise de gestion. Il en résulte une hypothèque permanente sur l'exploitation que l'on cherche à réduire par une transformation radicale du système de culture et l'extension généralisée de pratiques qui avaient, depuis toujours, encouragé une certaine forme d'exode rural. Par conséquent, interpréter l'évolution de l'agriculture à l'époque comme l'évidence d'une « crise agricole » ne tient pas. Il s'agit plutôt d'une adaptation positive aux exigences nouvelles posées par l'évolution économique et sociale.
