Abstract
Cette étude estime les déterminants des demandes de travailleurs et d’heures travaillées et les interrelations entre ces deux facteurs à partir d’un modèle d’ajustement flexible généralisé. Le modèle est estimé avec les données mensuelles des secteurs manufacturiers québécois et ontarien de mai 1983 à février 1986. Deux résultats ressortent de nos estimations tant pour le Canada que pour le Québec : 1) une diminution de la semaine normale de travail aurait un impact négatif sur l’emploi et positif sur la moyenne d’heures supplémentaires; 2) une diminution des coûts fixes par travailleur à temps plein augmenterait le nombre de personnes employées et diminuerait le temps supplémentaire à court terme.
