Abstract
In the northern hemisphere permafrost underlies approximately 24% of the exposed land and extends from 26N in the Himalayas to 84N in Canada (Zhang et al. 1999). In Antarctica permafrost can be found throughout the continent. Geographically permafrost regions are divided into areas of continuous permafrost (permafrost underlying 90-100% of the area) and discontinuous permafrost (permafrost underlying 50-90% of the area) (Fig. 18.1). Although permafrost areas are relatively sparsely populated, they include towns, industrial sites and settlements for research groups. Important habitats for vulnerable polar ecosystems are found both in the northern and southern hemisphere.
