Cette étude aborde l’acquisition de l’écriture selon des points de vue linguistique et psycholinguistique. Elle s’appuie sur l’analyse d’un corpus complémentaire de productions écrites et de commentaires métagraphiques de jeunes enfants de 4 à 7 ans. L’objectif est de montrer, à travers les différentes procédures déployées, en quoi l’acquisition de l’écriture du français résulte d’un compromis nécessaire entre deux principes : sémiographique et phonographique, et au-delà, comment elle s’inscrit dans une logique morphographique. L’analyse porte plus précisément sur les problèmes que les jeunes enfants rencontrent dans différentes tâches de production orthographique ou écritures inventées, et sur la manière dont ils parviennent progressivement à construire des savoirs complexes qui combinentces principes. Pour conclure, des pistes d’intervention didactiques sont suggérées.
