Abstract
Des similitudes frappantes entre les traits de caractère attribués aux Africains par les colonisateurs européens et ceux qui sont attribués aux sourds par les experts entendants amènent à formuler l'hypothèse que cette description de la « psychologie des sourds » reflète non pas tant les caractéristiques des sourds que les convictions intéressées des spécialistes entendants qui la produisent. L'« audisme » désigne la façon qu'ont les entendants de décrire la communauté sourde et d'exercer leur autorité sur elle. Les effets débilitants des pratiques oppressives de l'institution audiste sont exposés et une esquisse de redistribution du pouvoir est présentée.
