Cet article propose une analyse comparative de la situation de deux populations polynésiennes marquées par des histoires différentes dont les revendications en termes de décolonisation sont formulées aujourd’hui de façon distincte : les Maaori de la Nouvelle-Zélande et les Tahitiens de la Polynésie française. Des recherches ethnographiques sur la vie associative révèlent que malgré les différences entre les deux populations, les engagements citoyens des Maaori et des Tahitiens se ressemblent en ce qu’ils s’expriment à travers une affirmation culturelle et identitaire forte. L’auteure essaie de comprendre cette affirmation qui se fait surtout à la marge de l’espace politique commun où se négocie en théorie le vivre-ensemble dans des sociétés pluralistes comme la Nouvelle-Zélande et la Polynésie française. Pour ce faire, elle se demande si cette configuration des pratiques citoyennes ne s’expliquerait pas par les arrangements politiques au sein des deux États à l’étude – une république dans un cas, une monarchie constitutionnelle dans l’autre – et ne renverrait pas à la structuration des interactions sociales durant l’histoire coloniale – française d’un côté, britannique de l’autre –, et en particulier aux discriminations qui y furent à l’oeuvre.
